One of my favorite times of the day takes place right after the dinner dishes are finished, and I know I can finally sit down to work on my favorite thing — cross stitch. The house has gone quiet, and you’ll find me in the same chair with a needle in my hand. It took me years and a bunch of trial and error to land on a cross-stitch stand setup that lets me stitch for two hours without my neck, shoulders, or eyes filing a complaint. This is the setup I actually use, piece by piece, and why each one earned its spot.

Why I finally switched to an embroidery stand

For the longest time I held my hoop in one hand and stitched with the other. That’s how most of us start, and it worked. It works for many of us — until the evening you notice your shoulder is up around your ear and your stitches have gone tight and puckered along with it. I won’t even mention the pain shooting out of my left hand from gripping the hoop. I even started stitching in-hand, but then I realized how awful my white stitches were.

I found that a stand changes all of that. Both hands free — one above the fabric, one below — means faster, more even stitches and a back that isn’t curled over the work. I honestly didn’t expect it to make the difference it did. It’s the piece I’d tell a stitching friend to get before almost anything else.

The stand that lives by my chair

After fifty, the fabric count didn’t change — my eyes did. You know the moment: when 18-count Aida suddenly looks like 40-count linen. Good light and a little magnification gave me my evening stitching back, and that felt like a small blessing.

For twenty-six years, an empty seat was a problem I solved by lunchtime. Someone quit. Someone’s mother got sick. A position sat open, and the work piled up against the door — and I felt it. It’s what I did. It’s what I was good at. It never once occurred to me that I might become one.

I ran a large department, and I cannot believe I did it for that number of years. On paper, that means schedules, budgets, supply issues, and the kinds of meetings that could have been just emails. In practice, it meant I was the person who felt the domino when a chair emptied before anyone else did — felt it inside my chest, the way you feel a draft from a door left open somewhere in the house. Someone would resign on a Friday, and by Monday I’d already redrawn the whole map so the work still got done and no one on the outside ever saw the gap. Only the people who had to do more work than they should have to keep everything flowing.

Because there was always an outside. There was a board that held me to account, and a public that noticed. They noticed quickly when something went wrong, and by name. They noticed less often when things went right — but when they did, oh, it was something. A plaque. A mention. My name read out loud in a room full of people who clapped.

I told myself I didn’t do it for the applause. That was mostly true, kinda. But somewhere across twenty-six years, I lost the ability to tell the difference between being needed and being myself. They had fused. If you’d asked me who I was, I could have answered in one sentence — and the sentence had a title in it. I was the woman who could sort out a staffing crisis as well as a supply crisis before my coffee got cold, and I’ll be honest with you: I was a little smug about it.

And then I left.

I’d love to tell you it was bold and cinematic, that I strode out with a speech. The truth is quieter and less flattering. My body had been sending me letters for years, and I’d been marking them read later. The not-sleeping. The blood pressure. The pain. The anxiety. The thing that made my chest feel like it was being squeezed by a snake and wouldn’t let go. Even though I chose to leave. My body didn’t give me a choice. Both of those are true at the same time — which is one of the first hard lessons this chapter has insisted on teaching me.

Here’s what no one warned me about: the accolades turned in their notice the same day I did. No board. No public. No problem to sort, no open seat to figure out, and no one watching to see if I filled it well. Just a house, two boxers, and a quiet mind. I also had a two o’clock in the afternoon that stretched out in front of me with nothing in it that had my name on it.

I’ve written before about what nobody tells you about the house getting quiet. This is the other half of it.

Everyone tells me how lucky I am. And they’re right — which is exactly why I never say the following part out loud. I have time, and rest, and a life other people are working themselves sick to reach. Complaining about it feels almost obscene. So I don’t. I just stand in my kitchen at two in the afternoon, Emmitt asleep on the cool wooden floor, and feel like I’ve quietly disappeared inside my own good life.

It took me longer than I’d like to admit to see the thing that was sitting right in front of me.

Every vacancy I ever filled belonged to someone else.

Twenty-six years of empty chairs, and not one of them made my life easier. There were other people’s shortfalls, other people’s absences, other people’s needs pressing up against a deadline. I got so good — so fast, so reliable, so praised — at filling the spaces other people left behind that I never once sat down in a space of my own and I just got further and further behind. I’m not sure I’d have known how. An empty chair, to me, was never a place to rest. It was a problem with a clock on it.

And now here I am, standing in the emptiest chair of my life. The first one, in twenty-six years, that actually belongs to me.

For weeks I treated it like every other vacancy — like something gone wrong that I was failing to fix fast enough. I kept reaching for the old reflex. Fill it. Prove you’re still useful. Redraw the map. Make the gap disappear before anyone notices. Take a class. Start a business. Volunteer for the thing. Become needed again, quickly, so the draft from that open door would finally stop.

But this chair isn’t a problem to solve by lunchtime. It isn’t a shortfall to cover. No one is on the outside keeping score. For the first time in my adult life, there is a seat with my name on it, and no one needs me to hurry out of it.

I was never the vacancies I filled. I was the woman filling them until the next person arrived. And I have never — not once — simply sat down to find out what I’d want to put in a space that was finally mine.

I won’t pretend I’ve mastered this. Most afternoons I still catch myself halfway up out of the chair, reaching for something to be useful about. Old reflexes don’t resign as cleanly as I did.

But I’m learning something I never had to learn when every empty seat came with a deadline and an audience. I’m learning how to stay in the chair. How to sit quietly long enough to hear what I actually want — not what needs doing, not what would make me useful again, but what’s mine.

It turns out that’s a skill. A real one, with its own small, unglamorous practice. And I’m only at the very beginning of learning it. Some days it looks like nothing more ambitious than ten small, gentle things and a slow afternoon.

I’ll show you what I’m finding, as I find it. For now, I’m just learning to stay seated.

Pull up a chair.

Every August I face the same standoff between being lazy and time smart. My issue goes from still having patriotic decor to take down to the stores are full of pumpkins plus the thermometer says 92. Decorating for fall too early feels silly but waiting until October feels like missing it entirely. I have googled how to transition porch from summer to fall more times than I want to admit, and every year the answer comes back orange.

The answer I’ve settled into after years of trying is the in-between porch ( if you are from the South you get it). Basically, it is the idea that leans toward fall without pretending summer is over. It happens in stages, it never fights the weather, and by the time real sweater season arrives, the porch is already halfway there and so in my energy.

Start with what comes down, not what goes up

The brightest summer things go first — the neon-leaning florals, the beach-y and patriotic accents, anything sun-faded. What’s left is a quieter porch, and a quiet porch is the perfect canvas for early fall. It isn’t very showy, but just like in life August is very relaxed. If you built out the summer version of this porch back in June, this is the gentle undoing of it.

Sunflowers first, mums later

Here’s the thing nobody tells you: it’s too hot for mums in August. They’ll sulk. Sunflowers, though — sunflowers are the bridge. They read late-summer and early-fall, and they’ll carry you clear to September, when the mums and asters can take over in burgundy and gold.

White pumpkins whisper; orange ones shout

When pumpkins do arrive at my house, the first ones are always white or that soft silvery-green. Set against summer’s leftover greenery they look intentional, not premature. The orange ones can wait for October — they’ve never minded.

Swap the textiles before anything else

A plaid or rust-toned pillow on the porch swing, a scalloped mat at the front door, a throw draped over the rocker for the first cool evening. Textiles are the cheapest season-changers there are, and they don’t care what the thermometer says.

Rework the wreath, don’t replace it

My summer wreath loses its brightest stems and gains dried wheat and a length of natural burlap ribbon. Ten minutes, mostly free, and the front door quietly announces the season is turning.

Light it earlier

The one true sign of fall: the evenings shorten. A lantern lit at seven, a string of warm-white lights, a candle on the porch table (battery, if the wind has opinions). Light is what makes the in-between porch feel cozy instead of unfinished.

How to Transition Porch from Summer to Fall: Your Questions

When should you start decorating for early fall?

Mid to late August is the sweet spot for the first layer, at least here in the South. Start with what comes down rather than what goes up, then add sunflowers and greenery. Save the orange pumpkins and the mums for late September, when the weather has finally caught up with the calendar.

How do you transition porch from summer to fall when it is still ninety degrees?

Work in stages and let color do the talking. Swap the brightest summer pieces for warmer neutrals, bring in sunflowers instead of mums, and add one textile you actually like sitting next to. Nothing about that reads as a costume change, and all of it reads as fall.

What flowers work for early fall before mums?

Sunflowers are the bridge. They read late summer and early fall at the same time, and they will not sulk in the heat the way mums do. Dried wheat, hydrangea that has gone papery, and anything with a seed head will carry you into September too.

Is it too early for pumpkins in August?

Orange ones, yes. White and pale green ones, no. Set against the greenery that is still alive on your porch, white pumpkins look intentional instead of premature, and that is the whole difference between early and too early.

How long does an early fall porch last before you change it again?

Six to eight weeks, roughly mid August through the end of September. After that you are only adding, never starting over: deeper colors, real mums, and the pumpkins that finally get to be orange.

There is a particular week in late July when I stop wanting to do anything at all and just let my brain wander. The garden is doing whatever it wants (like weeds), the house feels sticky and very cluttered, and every magazine on my coffee table wants me thinking about fall. Even though I still have a solid 7 weeks left I know it will soon be time to get all my pumpkins out of the attic.

In reality, I do enjoy late summer. The relaxed nature of just sitting and enjoying the sunlight takes me to a place where I can just breathe. There are no “new me” resolutions or lists. A late summer reset is quieter than that. It’s ten minutes here and there, putting the house and the days back in order so that when September comes, it finds me ready instead of rushed.

Here is what that looks like at my house, in case your late July feels the same.

1. Clear one surface, not the whole house

Pick the one counter or table that collects everything. Ten minutes, one basket for the things that belong elsewhere. The whole room exhales — and so do you.

2. Retire what summer wore out

The bleached-out porch pillow, the candle burned to the last inch, the flip-flops by the door. Late summer is when I let tired things go so I’m not dragging them into a new season.

3. Start a “fall someday” note

Not a to-do list — a wish list. Mine currently says: paint the front door, find a good apple cake recipe, finish the sampler I started in March. Wanting things slowly is half the pleasure.

4. Simmer something

A small pot with sliced lemon, a sprig of rosemary, a splash of vanilla. It costs nearly nothing and makes the whole downstairs feel cared for. (Come September I’ll switch to orange and cinnamon, but I’m not rushing it.)

5. Swap one textile

Not the whole house — one throw, one pillow cover, one table runner in a deeper shade. It’s remarkable how one warm texture starts easing a room toward the next season without a single pumpkin in sight.

6. Do the drawer

You know the one. Ten minutes, a trash bag, done. I do mine with a glass of iced tea and something good on the radio, and it feels less like chores and more like keeping house.

7. Put the garden to work

Cut whatever is blooming and bring it in — zinnias forgive everything. A jar on the kitchen windowsill is the fastest good-life moment I know.

8. Plan one slow morning
